CHRISTY with DAHANDA is a collective dedicated to merging technology with art. They participated in Maker Faire Shenzhen 2019. In 2024, they have brought back an innovative project called “The Wedding.” This unique installation will be showcased at Maker Faire Shenzhen 2024, which brings Korean wedding traditions to life through robotics.
The installation features three robots representing the groom, bride, and a witness. These robots, operated by motors, perform a key part of a Korean wedding ceremony: the traditional bow. The humanoid robots are designed to mimic human joints, allowing them to sit and bow naturally.
What sets this project apart is its attention to detail. The scene where the groom and the bride greet each other is flexibly expressed as a humanoid robot that reproduces human joints sitting and bowing. The groom and bride robots perform different types of bows, accurately reflecting the various stages of the wedding ceremony and their distinct roles. This showcases the nuanced etiquette in Korean wedding traditions.
This bowing ceremony is an important part of Korean history and culture. It symbolizes respect, unity, and family bonds. By recreating this ritual with robots, “The Wedding” blends technology with art and tradition.
