Guided by the motto “All are Educable; All can Succeed,” Man Kwan Pak Kau College fosters a holistic approach to education, emphasizing both academic rigor and hands-on learning. Through a framework known as ACTIVE learning—Authentic Learning, Caring School Culture, Technology, Innovation, Values, and Esteem—the school creates an environment where students can thrive and excel.
In 2018, the school’s efforts to push educational boundaries were recognized when they were awarded the prestigious School of Distinction Award (全國青少年科技創新大賽十佳科技教育創新學校). Their focus on STEAM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) has enabled students to develop creative solutions for real-world challenges, equipping them with the tools necessary for the future.
Innovative Projects
1. Emergency Distance Post (AI Applications for Hiking)
Accidents often occur during solo mountain hikes, with solo climbers facing higher risks. To reduce the chances of fatal accidents, the Emergency Distance Post project was developed by students. Powered by solar panels and Microbit IoT kits, this project is equipped with emergency sensors and communication tools that provide real-time data to authorities via the ThingSpeak platform.
The posts are strategically placed along hiking trails and programmed to alert emergency services in case of accidents. Using ArcGIS Online Dashboard, the system maps data provided by the Hong Kong Government, allowing authorities to pinpoint emergencies instantly. Additionally, the system sends SMS alerts to emergency responders, reducing response time and potentially saving lives.
2. BirdCage – Greenovation for Smart Homes and the Environment
This project focuses on combining sustainability with technology, allowing for more environmentally friendly living spaces. By using sensors and smart technology, BirdCage helps to monitor and manage environmental factors within homes.
3. Smart Environmental Monitoring Systems
Another innovative project from the students at Man Kwan Pak Kau College is the Smart Environmental Monitoring System. Utilizing tools like Arduino and Raspberry Pi, students have developed systems that can monitor environmental changes in real-time. These systems are especially useful for tracking pollution levels and other ecological factors that affect community health.
Promoting STEAM Education Across Hong Kong
Beyond their own projects, Man Kwan Pak Kau College is leading the charge in promoting STEAM education in both primary and secondary schools across Hong Kong. With funding from the Quality Education Fund under the Thematic Network Scheme “Science in ACTION,” the school works to engage teachers and students in the exciting world of STEAM and AI.
